Announcing Katya Yancehva is the new Juanita High School Girls Varsity Coach

We are excited to share that Katya Yancehva has been announced as the new Juanita High School Girls Varsity Basketball coach. Katya was previously a part of our league as the 8th Grade girls coach in 2018. When she first joined our league everyone quickly fell in love with Katya. She is a joy to be around with a strong passion for growing leaders on and off of the court. We couldn't be any more excited to support you in this new journey. Congratulations Katya!

Read more below about Katya in her Juanita High School coaching bio:

"Basketball has been a lifelong fixture in Coach Katya Yancehva’s life. Her initial experiences with basketball were with Bulgaria’s Academic Club Team. Later she would play in the US for Lewis-Clark State College while earning her Bachelor’s degree. She rounded out her career as a player in Italy playing professionally for Florence Basket.

As Katya’s career as player came to an end, she continued to follow her passion for basketball as a coach. She has coached a range of players, camps, and teams including a successful season with the Juanita Basketball Club’s 8th grade girls’ team.

Outside of her love for basketball, Katya enjoys spending time with her family and traveling."

Katya Yancehva - JHS Girls Varsity Coach

Thanks 8th Grade for an incredible 5 years!

We said our goodbyes to the 8th grade team last night as they move up to the Juanita High School team next year. There have been so many incredible memories with this team.

8th Grade Tribute Video:

This video was made by Sophia Porcincula as tribute to her teammates and their last year together. The last 5 years in this league have been amazing watching you girls learn and grow as athletes and leaders. We can’t wait to see everything you accomplish at the high school in the next 4 years.

If you would rather pay by check, the cost is $650.  If a check is your preference, you can send the check to the following:

Juanita Basketball Club – Girls

c/o: Erin Rutenbar

13613 121st Ave NE

Kirkland, WA 98034

The reasons for the increase in fees this season are due to increased league fees (tournament costs, gym fees, referee fees, etc…), a lower number of turnout this season over last season, and we are also ordering new uniforms for the girls.  Our plan is to keep these uniforms at the end of the season and continue to recycle them for years to come which will allow us to lower fees in coming years.

I’ve already heard some complaints surrounding the increase in fees.  Trust me when I say that this was discussed in several board meetings in much detail.  We have to cover the costs but if you look at the overall gain, the cost is minimal compared to other leagues.  Your daughter will get 2+ practices a week and 35+ games this season.  We can all do the math, but that is a lot of basketball for the money.

Scholarship Info:

1)      Scholarship opportunities exist for those families in need.  We fully understand this is a private matter and will remain completely confidential within the board of the JBC organization.  Options for scholarship:

a.       Have a business sponsor the player fees for $700.  This is $50 more than the standard player fee so that it may also assist another family in need.

b.       JBC offers a scholarship of a maximum of $200. The balance of what is agreed upon will be due October 25th.  We may also ask that you provide service commitment beyond the minimum of 6 hours outlined below.

c.       JBC offers a scholarship of a maximum of $200 plus installment plan.  All reasonable payment plans will be accepted if paid in full by December 31st. We may also ask that you provide service commitment beyond the minimum of 6 hours outlined below.

2)      NOTE: If you are in need of a scholarship and have not worked out a payment plan with JBC by the first tournament, your daughter will not be allowed to play in that tournament. At the end of the day we want you to know that we will work with you and we want to avoid having to reach out to the family.

Player Contract:

Please see the attached. Please read with your daughter, print, sign and give to your coach.  This document pretty much lays out the expectations for the season.

Upcoming Tournaments to put into your Calendar:

·         Halloween Hoopla - Oct 25-27th (Redmond)

·         Eastlake Tournament - 11/22-11/24 (Eastlake)

·         Cold Turkey Tournament - Nov 29th-Dec 1st (Newport/Bellevue)

·         MLK Rebel Challenge – Jan 18th-Jan 20th (This will be our Juanita Tourney sponsored by Zag Motors)

·         Seaside Tourney – Feb 14th-Feb 16th (This is our fun travel tournament. Hotel info to follow soon)

·         ETL End of Season Tourney – Mar 6th-Mar 8th (Will be held locally in our area somewhere TBD)

·         State Tourney – Mar 13th-Mar 15th   (Only for those teams that qualify)

League Play:

We will begin league games starting the first weekend of December and going thru March.  Each team will play 1 to 2 games each weekend. Potentially a bye week in there at some point. Schedule to come out in November.  As you will see in the player contract, we will once again be playing in the Eastside Travel League (ETL) which means will not be traveling outside of King County to play a league game.

Fundraising

First and foremost, we like to remind parents that we are a 501c3 non-profit organization now, which is tax deductible.  If you or your company would like to make a donation please go to this link: https://squareup.com/store/juanita-basketball-club. I know many of you work for companies that have a matching program if you volunteer hours, donate gifts, donate money, etc… If this is the case, please take the time to work with us on this.  Every dollar counts, and keep in mind that we do donate to the JHS Girls Basketball Booster Club for the future of our girls in the program now. Even the smallest of donations is HIGHLY appreciated.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please go to this link: https://www.juanitagirlsselect.org/support-jbc and follow up with us.  We would love to advertise for you!

Date is still TBD, but we will be holding another auction event similar to previous years.  Your coach will be reaching out soon to get a volunteer to assist in putting together a team basket for the auction.

Upcoming Basketball Camp Info

Hello JBC parents!  It’s been quite some time since I last reached out.  I hope your family is doing well.  I wanted get a note out regarding some upcoming camps and clinics.  As I mentioned during our awards banquet, it is imperative that the girls get some court time in the offseason.  With that said, I’ve put together a list of some local and semi-local camps and clinics.  Some are day camps and some are overnighters.  My daughters have attended several of these, so if you have questions, just let me know.

Just as an FYI…  We are hoping to put together another summer clinic for the JBC kids like we did last year but I’m waiting to hear who they announce as the new JHS girls basketball coach so that I can work with that person on the logistics.

Thank you,

Ed Ruyle - Director

President's Day Weekend

Our tradition has always been to travel to Seaside for this 3 day weekend, but due to MLK not being a state qualifier for us, the board and coaches have voted that this year we will be playing in the Red Lion’s President Day Classic in Port Angeles.  This is a state qualifier for our teams, and still allows us to have one travel tournament for the girls.  Jennifer Santiago is checking on hotel accommodations for us and there will be more to follow.
